Course Details
Addiction can have a profound impact on individuals, families and communities. How can we respond with compassion, wisdom and hope while also recognising the challenges and complexities that addiction brings?
This inspiring and practical training day is designed for pastors, church leaders, pastoral teams and those working across organisations and services supporting individuals and families affected by addiction.
Together, we will explore what addiction is, why it happens and the impact it can have on individuals, relationships and wider communities. We’ll consider the challenges of supporting people in active addiction and recovery, including stigma, relapse, boundaries, expectations and the risk of burnout for those who care for others.
We will also explore different approaches to recovery, consider a biblical perspective, and reflect on how churches, organisations and communities can create places of welcome, safety and belonging where people can find hope and be supported on their journey towards recovery and restoration.
Through teaching, reflection and honest conversation, this will be a valuable day for anyone seeking greater understanding, practical insight and confidence in walking alongside those affected by addiction.
This course is delivered in person at Destiny College, 70 Cathedral Street, G4 0RD
Cost: £69 including lunch and refreshments.

Keynote Speakers

SHONA STIRLING
Shona Stirling has spent nearly three decades at the front of senior leadership — in education, in church, and building a charity from the ground up. She knows from the inside what it costs to lead people through hard things, and what it does to the leader carrying it.
A qualified counsellor, clinical supervisor, and ILM Level 7 executive coach, Shona brings both professional rigour and lived experience to her work with senior leaders. She is passionate about helping those who lead others to understand what people carry — and what that understanding makes possible in terms of caring and pastoring.

DAVID THOMSON
David is a counsellor with over 25 years of experience. He pioneered the Destiny College Counselling faculty in 2015 and with the college team contributed to the development of counselling education. He also has over 20 years of leadership experience at Destiny Church.
Now in semi-retirement he continues to focus on developing training for counsellors and as well as working in private practice.
